In 2022, the music world was marked by the release of the Reset album, a bold collaboration between Sonic Boom (aka Peter Kember, founding member of the group Spacemen 3) and Panda Bear (aka Noah Lennox, member of the collective Animal Collective) born in the heart of the confinement during the covid-19 pandemic. These two artists, known for their commitment to psychedelic sonic explorations and their desire to push the boundaries of pop rock music, came together to create an album that stands out for its originality, its freshness and a deep nostalgia for a bygone era.

Reset is a dive into the world of psychedelic pop rock music of the 1950s and 1960s, reimagined and reinterpreted through a modern prism. From the very first notes, it becomes clear that this album is a love letter to a time when pop and rock were still synonymous with innocence, discovery and melodic simplicity. But this is not just an attempt to resurrect the past: Reset manages to make vintage sounds coexist with contemporary electronic production and an experimental approach.

Despite the apparent simplicity of the lyrics, each song seems to contain a deeper level of emotion and meaning, often veiled by joyful and carefree instrumentation. For example, in “Go On”, Panda Bear and Sonic Boom poetically explore the butterfly effect within the human experience. It reminds us that every action, no matter how insignificant, can have wider repercussions than we can imagine, and that in this constant uncertainty, the best thing to do is to start from scratch, to press the reset button as the album’s name seems to suggest, to detach ourselves from old patterns, and to continue moving forward with a new perspective.

Description

The album “Panda Bear / Sonic Boom – Reset” was born during the lockdown, a period of withdrawal and reflection for these two artists.

Indeed, the lockdown was a period of brutal rupture with the constant routine and movement of everyday life. For many artists, including Sonic Boom and Panda Bear, it was an opportunity to take a break and revisit influences, ideas, and creative methods that had been put aside. Being cut off from the outside world and their usual activities, they were able to focus on deep introspection and unprecedented artistic exploration.

Sonic Boom and Panda Bear both have long careers marked by musical experimentation. Sonic Boom, a founding member of the group Spacemen 3, has always been fascinated by sonic distortion and psychedelic expansion. Meanwhile, Panda Bear, a member of the Animal Collective, is known for his unique style of blending psychedelic pop, experimental folk and electronic music. Their collaboration on Reset is based on a shared admiration for the sounds of pre-psychedelic pop, and their intention to rediscover what made these songs so captivating and moving.

The album’s very title, Reset, suggests a return to an essential base. Using samples of classic songs from the 1950s and 1960s, Sonic Boom and Panda Bear offer a kind of “reboot” of pop music. However, far from being content with simple covers, they deconstruct and reconstruct these songs by injecting them with modern elements such as soaring synthesizers, reverbs and hypnotic rhythm loops.

The album has also been seen as a response to the uncertainty and anxiety of the modern era. By revisiting a period when pop music embodied joy, discovery and optimism, Sonic Boom and Panda Bear offer a welcome respite from contemporary challenges. Reset seeks not only to remind us of a simpler past, but also to find hope in the present by celebrating the resilience of pop music and its ability to unite people across generations.

“Panda Bear / Sonic Boom – Reset” is much more than just nostalgia for the music of the 1950s and 1960s. It is a bold and emotional exploration of how pop rock music can be reinvented and reimagined to speak to a new era. By blending old and new sounds, exploring themes of nostalgia and change, this album manages to be both a tribute to the past and a deeply contemporary work. It is an invitation to rediscover what makes pop so magical, while reminding us that even in times of uncertainty, music can be a source of hope and comfort.
