The iconic symbols of Japan printed on our collection of Japan Streetwear t-shirts is a fashion trend that captivates style lovers around the world. A blend of tradition and modernity, this unique style is often expressed through T-shirts featuring emblematic patterns of Japanese culture. In this article, we’ll explore the main motifs on our clothing, such as sumo, ramen, takoyaki, and retro Akihabara gaming, as well as their presence in pop and underground music culture. You will be surprised by the enormous enthusiasm that Japan arouses through fashion but also music.

The Sumos: Unique symbols on Japanese streetwear t-shirts and in music

Sumo wrestlers are one of the most powerful and recognizable symbols of Japanese culture. Sumo, a traditional Japanese sport, is much more than a simple clash of strength; it is steeped in Shinto rituals and ancestral traditions. OnJapan streetwear t-shirts, illustrations of sumo wrestlers are often stylized to capture both their physical power and cultural significance.

Representations may vary, from realistic depictions to humorous caricatures. Sumo wrestlers are sometimes depicted in action, with dynamic movements and fierce expressions, symbolizing determination and discipline as on our Japanese “Sumo” t-shirt. We opted for a design that was both realistic and offbeat by placing our logo on top.

In international musical culture, sumos are also starting to appear. For example, the virtual group Gorillaz used sumo wrestling images in their teasers (The Book Of Noodle) and stage entrance videos, adding a strong visual dimension to their performances. This artistic choice reflects the global appeal of this iconic figure and his integration into various cultural domains.

Ramen: Japanese Cuisine in Streetwear Fashion

Ramen, an emblematic dish of Japan, is another popular motif on Japan streetwear t-shirts. This dish, consisting of noodles served in a flavorful broth with various accompaniments, is a true symbol of modern Japanese cuisine.

T-shirts featuring designs of ramen bowls have become a fun and stylish way to celebrate one’s love for this tasty dish of Japanese culture.

Ramen-themed T-shirt designs can be colorful and vibrant, often with illustrations of beautifully decorated bowls, chopsticks, and mouth-watering ingredients like soft-boiled eggs, slices of pork and seaweed. Our design adopts a more kawaii style adding an extra Japanese touch to streetwear.

In pop and underground music, ramen often appears in music videos and performances to evoke Japanese urban culture. A notable example is the music video for the song “Tokyo Bon 2020 (Makudonarudo)” by Namewee.

In this clip, we can see visual references to ramen and other aspects of Japanese culture. These cultural references reinforce the image of ramen as a symbol of daily life in Japan.

Takoyakis: A nod to Japanese Street Food

Takoyakis, small dumplings filled with octopus and cooked in special molds, are another icon of Japanese street food that is frequently found on Japanese streetwear T-shirts. Originating from Osaka, takoyakis are loved for their delicious taste and spectacular preparation.

On the front of street food stands in Japan, takoyakis are often represented by octopuses in a playful and kawaii way. We wanted to capture the very artistic side of this dynamic culinary culture by using this endearing little character in our very French way on our kawaii t-shirt “Maous tao”.

These street food delights are also present in musical culture, notably at Ultra Vomit, a French metal group. In the music video for their song “Takoyaki”, we can see an octopus escaping from a cook who was going to transform it into takoyaki. This humorous and visually impactful clip perfectly illustrates the integration of Japanese culinary culture into various musical genres, even the most unexpected like metal.

Combination of Symbols: A Harmonious Blend

A fascinating aspect of Japanese streetwear is how these different symbols can be combined to create unique and captivating designs.
