Ayo Ke Disco: Boogie, Pop & Funk from the South China Sea (1974-88)” is a vinyl compilation by Alice Whittington aka DJ Norsicaa and released on her own label Soundway Records. This collection highlights the vibrant music scene of Southeast Asia in the 1970s and 1980s, particularly the disco-funk, pop and funk genres that emerged in countries such as Indonesia, Singapore, Thailand, Malaysia, Hong Kong and the Philippines.

The album title, “Ayo Ke Disco“, means “Let’s go clubbing” in Indonesian, capturing the party spirit and energy of the dance floors of the time. The ten selected tracks offer a glimpse into the vibrant nightclubs and live music scenes of Southeast Asia, featuring disco-funk beats, psychedelic sounds, synthesizers and city pop influences.

Each track reflects the local adoption and adaptation of Western musical genres, while incorporating cultural and linguistic elements unique to each country.

The B-side of this compilation, which we particularly appreciate, exudes a festive atmosphere marked by sensuality and sophistication, carried by tracks that shine with their refined grooves, their bewitching melodies and their languorous and catchy rhythms. Among the flagship tracks, we find “Ayo Ke Disco” by John Philips & The Steps, a truly exhilarating ode to disco culture, and “Salah Tingkah” by Aria Yunior, a gem mixing funk and disco with irresistible elegance.

The music compilationAyo Ke Disco: Boogie, Pop & Funk from the South China Sea (1974-88)” is a sonic journey through an era (1974-1988) and a region in full effervescence, a celebration of the creativity and resilience of artists from Southeast Asia, and an invitation to rediscover musical treasures that have marked the cultural history of this part of the world.

The initiative of Soundway Records to publish this compilation is part of a broader approach to preserve and disseminate musical heritages that are often neglected or forgotten. By highlighting these artists and tracks, the label is giving new life to these works and allowing a contemporary audience to discover and appreciate the richness of the Southeast Asian music scene of the 1970s and 1980s.

The compilation “Ayo Ke Disco: Boogie, Pop & Funk from the South China Sea (1974-88)” has been carefully selected by Alice Whittington, also known as DJ Norsicaa, Managing Director of Soundway Records. Malaysian-born Whittington has drawn on her extensive collection of Asian records to assemble this album, reflecting her commitment to uncovering the region’s lesser-known musical treasures.

Featured artists include Fatimah Razak with “Dahaga,” The Black Brothers performing “Mangge Mangge,” and Marini & The Steps with “Ayo Ke Disco,” a great track that inspired the album’s title. Each track showcases the region’s diversity and cultural richness, showcasing local adaptations and appropriations of Western musical genres while incorporating traditional elements.

Side B, with its party tracks and irresistible grooves, seems designed to transform the listening experience into a celebration of chic and sensuality. It’s also a great way to demonstrate that funk and disco music was not just a Western phenomenon, but a global movement that inspired vibrant and authentic scenes elsewhere.
