Holger Czukay is an iconic figure of the experimental scene: he helped redefine the way music was conceived within the legendary band Can in the late 1960s, blending improvisation, electronics, hypnotic rhythms, and innovative recording techniques.

After Can, his solo career has been characterized by reinvention and eclecticism: unexpected sound collages, stylistic risks, and a constant curiosity for sonic textures permeate his work. In the 2000s, rather than relying on his classic albums, he chose to re-explore and reshape his songs for a new audience through limited editions with Claremont 56.

For Holger Czukay, this collaboration with Claremont 56, an independent label founded by Paul Mudd Murphy, represented a newfound freedom: producing limited, experimental editions, often for vinyl, favoring exploration over commercial constraints.

What makes Claremont 56 Versions so original is not just the quality of the tracks, but their diverse origins:

  • Reworked live recordings
  • Remixes of earlier pieces
  • Unreleased or archived versions that have long remained outside the commercial circuit
  • A desire to recontextualize sounds in new configurations, exploring texture more than traditional form

For fans of experimental music, krautrock, or sound history, this album serves not only as an auditory experience but also as a living archive of one of the most innovative minds in 20th-century music.

Description

Holger Czukay – Claremont 56 Versions is a compilation released on August 2, 2024, on the British electronic music label Claremont 56. It is not a “classic” album in the sense of a work recorded in one take during a single period, but rather a collection of versions, remixes, and reinventions of tracks produced by Holger Czukay, a pioneering German musician of the sonic avant-garde and co-founder of the cult band Can.

Holger Czukay was not just a bassist: he was also a composer, sound engineer, sonic explorer, and thinker on electronic music long before it became a dominant genre. His career spans several decades of experimentation across rock, ambient, krautrock, dub, electronica, and musique concrète.

This compilation comes from the later phase of his career, when he collaborated closely with the Claremont 56 label, founded by Paul “Mudd” Murphy. Together, they explored a series of limited vinyl releases (often only a few hundred copies) between 2009 and 2012, which were then compiled into the album 2024.

Claremont 56 is an independent label founded by Paul Mudd Murphy, dedicated to releasing beautiful music ranging from electronica and krautrock to ambient music and creative reinterpretations of classics.

Holger Czukay – Claremont 56 Versions is not a mainstream commercial release, but rather a celebration of the work of an artist who redefined modern music through his freedom and curiosity.

The project highlights several essential aspects:

  • The cross-genre nature of the music, from krautrock to ambient, dub, and electronica.
  • The connection between live performance and studio production, where each version tells a different story.
  • The importance of remixing as a means of artistic expression, beyond simply refreshing the sound.
  • The handcrafted approach to music: limited editions, numbered vinyl records, and meticulous reissues.

Whether you’re familiar with his work with Can or curious about the boundaries between electronic and experimental music, this album invites attentive listening, open to textures, surprises, and sonic detours—a musical adventure that is both timeless and deeply personal.
