The album “Saâda Bonaire” is much more than just a collection of songs; it is the result of an exceptional intercultural collaboration.
The album was conceived as a response to the political and social tensions of the time, incorporating elements of Oriental, African, and Jamaican music, mixed with Western influences of new wave and post-punk.
Saâda Bonaire was formed by Ralph “von” Richtoven, a German DJ and musician who produced the album with Dennis Bovell. To realise their vision of a fusion of Oriental, African and Western sounds, they had the innovative idea of recruiting talented musicians from the local immigration centre in Bremen. This approach allowed for the integration of a diversity of instruments and musical styles, creating a truly cosmopolitan sound.
The voices of Stefanie Lange and Claudia Hossfeld add an extra dimension to this sonic canvas. Their sensual and detached singing, often in harmony, creates a sense of mystery, enchantment and seduction.
The album was recorded in 1982 under the EMI label, but internal problems within the label led to the project being abandoned. It was not until 2013 that the album finally saw the light of day.
Among the album’s standout tracks, “You Could Be More as You Are” stands out for its irresistible groove and intriguing lyrics. It was recorded in Kraftwerk’s studio, which not only reinforced the technical quality of the track, but also allowed Saâda Bonaire to join a lineage of revolutionary musicians.
Its rediscovery and reissue in 2013 did justice to this musical gem, securing its place in the pantheon of visionary and influential albums.
