“Who is William Onyeabor?” is a vinyl album dedicated to the illustrious Nigerian artist and musician William Onyeabor.
The title of the album “Who is William Onyeabor?” perfectly embodies the mystery that surrounds the artist. Very few people are actually familiar with the personality and life of William Onyeabor. The few individuals who have agreed to talk about him allow few revelations to be shared. They transformed a singular character, not very malleable, who would have spent a few years in Russia before returning to his country to create a film studio, then a music studio.
Despite numerous requests, he categorically refused to give interviews. It would seem that he has definitely turned the page on music to devote himself entirely to God. The only exchange he will have before his disappearance in 2017 will be on the radio during a BBC 6 Music program, where he will declare that he creates music in the interest of helping people.
Released in 2013, this album brings together a selection of the greatest tracks from Onyeabor, renowned for his unique blend of afro-funk music, electronic music and catchy rhythms. The tracks on the album showcase the originality and innovative creativity of Onyeabor‘s music, with a combination of catchy funk harmonies, powerful rhythmic pulses and captivating synth sounds.
In these pieces always rhythmic and imbued with synthesizers, the lyrics take on a permanent committed character. While his country was emerging from a terrible war in Biafra (1967-1970), the denunciation of this conflict constitutes one of the subjects removed from his songs.
This compilation offers an authentic musical exploration through the decades, harmoniously blending retro sounds and touches of modernity. A gateway to the work of Onyeabor and the abundance of the Nigerian music scene is offered to you thanks to this album, thus offering an enriching discovery.
