The songs chosen for “Calling Out of Context” were recorded by Arthur Russell at home and in various studios between 1985 and 1990. These tracks come from his unreleased album of 1985, “Corn,” as well as a later unfinished album for Rough Trade Records. Some tracks, including “That’s Us/Wild Combination,” were meticulously reworked and re-recorded numerous times by Russell until his death in 1992.
In addition to singing and writing songs, Russell played many instruments on the album, including cello, percussion, guitar, keyboards, and vocals. Several tracks feature percussion and drum programming by Mustafa Khaliq Ahmed, as well as synthesizers and trombones by Peter Zummo. Both Ahmed and Zummo were longtime collaborators of Russell. Renowned singer Jennifer Warnes also contributed vocals to “That’s Us/Wild Combination,” and Steven Hall participated in the electronic drum recording.
This is an essential vinyl record for fans of alternative music and sonic explorers seeking unique discoveries.
