The album “Manuel Göttsching – E2-E4” is composed by Manuel Göttsching, German guitarist and composer, member of the krautrock band Ash Ra Temple. It is an emblematic work of electronic music, a record which has indelibly marked the history of this musical genre. Released in 1984, this album is often considered a cornerstone of techno and ambient music. It is the result of a unique improvisation session, captured in a single take, demonstrating Göttsching‘s raw talent and innovative vision.

The album consists of a single continuous track of 58 minutes and 38 seconds, subdivided into nine segments not marked on the original cover. This long piece develops gradually, building layers of repetitive and hypnotic motifs.

Artists and producers such as Carl Craig, Derrick May and Juan Atkins have cited Göttsching as a major influence, and pieces of “ strong>E2–E4” have been sampled and remixed numerous times in dance and electronic music. Manuel Göttsching‘s album “E2–E4” has indeed had a considerable influence on many artists throughout the decades, including James Murphy of LCD Soundsystem. This influence manifests itself noticeably in Murphy’s project entitled “45:33”.

Larry Levan, the legendary DJ and producer of the New York dance and disco scene, is often cited as having played “E2–E4” by Manuel Göttsching in his sets at Paradise Garage, the famous club where he was a resident. Although direct accounts and recordings of these sets are rare, several sources and testimonies from the time confirm that Levan deeply appreciated this album and used it in his mixes.

The album also inspired artists from various genres, including jazz fusion violinist Jean-Luc Ponty. In 1983, Ponty released the album “Individual Choice”, one of the tracks of which, “Computer Incantations for World Peace”, was notably influenced by “E2–E4”.

For anyone interested in the evolution of electronic music and the exploration of the endless possibilities of musical technologies, “Manuel Göttsching – E2-E4” is a listen essential, a work to be savored and constantly revisited.
