This box set contains 3LP (color: Gray)

The band Gray, founded by artist Jean-Michel Basquiat and Michael Holman, formed in the 1970s in New York, at a time when the art scene was bubbling with new ideas. What sets Gray apart is their multidisciplinary approach to music. The band became known not only for their music but also for their close connection to the visual arts and the New York underground scene.

Initially, Gray was a project that was intended to be as visual as it was sonic. Jean-Michel Basquiat and Holman, both fascinated by the city’s industrial sounds and chaotic atmosphere, wanted to create music that reflected the raw energy of New York, a city that was both creative and harsh, full of contrasts.

Rather than limiting themselves to conventional musical formats, Gray sought to deconstruct traditional notions of composition, drawing inspiration from noise, experimental jazz, funk, and even the city’s urban sounds. Their music is infused with raw textures and non-linear rhythms that intertwine to create a unique and often unpredictable sonic atmosphere.

Later, the talented and controversial actor and musician Vincent Gallo joined Gray, bringing another dimension to the composition and performance of the songs. Gallo, who also had a strong affinity for art and film, fit perfectly into the band’s multidisciplinary approach.

This reissue from Ubiquity Records is a special format and highly sought after by collectors: a 3LP version on gray vinyl. One of the most interesting aspects of this reissue is the addition of previously unreleased material, which offers a new dimension to Gray’s work. Not only does it revisit their past work, but it reinvents it by inviting renowned artists to bring their own vision to the band’s music such as: Hank Shocklee a key figure in the success of the group Public Enemy, Sal P of the post-punk no wave group Liquid Liquid, the famous musician and producer Todd Rundgren, the cult DJ and producer The Gaslamp Killer

The addition of a 16-page booklet and the 3LP gray vinyl format give this edition an artistic importance that transcends music to become a true art object. For fans of avant-garde music, of Jean-Michel Basquiat, or fans of the no wave scene, this limited edition is a must-have.

Description

The limited edition box set “Gray – Shade Of Anthology” represents some of the key works of the group founded by renowned visual artist Jean-Michel Basquiat and musician Michael Holman.

The group Gray was born in the 1970s, in the cultural effervescence of the New York underground. Gray embodies a unique fusion between visual arts and music. It is distinguished by its avant-garde approach, mixing noises, electronic sounds, jazz, and urban rhythms, creating an experimental sound that has become emblematic of a pivotal era in contemporary art and underground music.

The group Gray was born in 1979, in the Lower East Side of Manhattan, an emblematic neighborhood of alternative culture. At that time, New York was a true melting pot of creativity where artists, musicians and performers rubbed shoulders and inspired each other. It was in this context that Jean-Michel Basquiat, then a promising young artist, and Michael Holman, a musician and filmmaker with a passion for experimentation, decided to form a band.

Their music was distinguished by discordant sounds, irregular percussions and noises extracted from everyday New York life, such as machine noises, sirens or conversations picked up in the street. The name Gray is itself a direct reference to the medical world, inspired by the famous Gray’s Anatomy, a medical book that Basquiat was particularly fond of. This choice of name also reflects the band’s penchant for deconstruction and assemblage, both in their music and in their approach to artistic creation.

This 2020 reissue of “Gray – Shade Of Anthology” is much more than just a version of the album. This is a collector’s edition enriched with unreleased content and remixes by influential figures in music, while being accompanied by exclusive details that make it a true centerpiece for lovers of experimental music and rare vinyl.
