The collaboration between the band Nøise and Obey Records results in an album that transcends the simple boundaries of music. The combination of visual art and experimental music creates an immersive and memorable experience, capturing the essence of the band while fitting into the artistic universe of Shepard Fairey.
The album title, Resurrectionem Ex-Mortuis, which means “Resurrection from the dead” in Latin, is not chosen at random.
Sonically, “Shepard Fairey (Obey) & Nøise – Ressurectionem Ex-Mortuis Remix” strikes with its complex textures and dense atmospheres. The remixes of the tracks are loaded with industrial sounds, heavy percussion, distorted synthesizers, and white noise that immerse the listener in an atmosphere that is both mystical and oppressive. This sound pairs well with Obey’s visual identity, often associated with counterculture, subversion, and raw energy.
The remixes, influenced by genres such as ambient, drone and industrial, are meticulously constructed. Deep bass and reverb effects amplify the feeling of immersion, recalling the spirit of some pioneering bands of experimental music such as Throbbing Gristle or Coil. The sound production of this limited edition is meticulous, with an attention to detail that honors the sound quality specific to the vinyl format.
A cover signed Shepard Fairey and Tony Aguero
The design of the cover is one of the most captivating elements of this limited edition. Shepard Fairey has created a visual work that takes up vibrant and symbolic colors: black and white, complemented by touches of red, blue and ochre, bring a visual depth that immediately attracts attention. On the front side, an open hand holds a flame, a symbol of rebirth, energy and spiritual power. This hand and flame motif is surrounded by several iconic symbols that are recurrent in Fairey’s work: a circle and a half of a floral rosette, motifs that evoke a mystical balance and are frequently seen in his work.
This symbolic image, refined but powerful, is intended as a metaphor for resurrection, the central theme of the album. It reflects the idea of renewal and awakening, themes that are often found in Shepard Fairey’s work, which draws on counterculture iconography and spiritual symbolism to convey a powerful message.
The back cover illustrated by Tony Aguero offers a more complex, almost surrealist composition, where various visual elements blend into a dense and symbolic drawing. Among these elements, we can distinguish a Japanese samurai head, evoking strength and honor, alongside a pig’s head, an ambiguous symbol often associated with voracity and debauchery. The drawing also includes an eagle whose head appears to have been severed, with blood or red flames escaping from it. This eagle, holding an arrow in one of its talons, refers to warrior iconography and the fragility of life, a striking contrast that underlines brutality and resilience.
In this composition, we also find an animal head, probably a dog or a wolf, with its mouth open, which embodies strength, survival and loyalty. Finally, the skull, omnipresent in the imagery of punk and underground culture, completes this scene with contrasting and symbolic elements. This collage of images, specific to Obey’s aesthetic, represents a world that is both chaotic and coherent, where each element adds a dimension of violence, resistance and the quest for meaning.
