Discovery: Interstella 5555 is the first vinyl reissue of the Japanese version of the legendary album Discovery, limited to 25,000 copies.

The album Discovery by Daft Punk, released in 2001, is a major and timeless work of electronic music. It marks a turning point in the career of the French duo, composed of Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo. After Homework (1997), oriented towards house and raw techno, Discovery offers a sound inspired by the 70s and 80s, mixing disco, funk and electro. Each track is a sonic gem, with cult classics like “Veridis Quo“, “One More Time“, “Digital Love“, and “Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger“.

Discovery stands out from Daft Punk’s classic albums due to its intimate connection to Interstella 5555, a Japanese animated film made in collaboration with the master of the genre, Leiji Matsumoto, famous for his science fiction works like Albator and Galaxy Express 999 (who sadly left us in 2023). And that’s where the Interstella 5555 Japanese vinyl edition really comes into its own.

This edition was originally designed for the Japanese market, where Interstella 5555 was a huge success. It stands out with its neat packaging, exclusive visuals from the film, bonuses such as a Daft Club membership card and exceptional sound quality, true to the reputation of Japanese pressings.

But what makes this edition even more special is its design. It sports an exclusive cover, with illustrations from the film Interstella 5555, and an obi (the typical strip of Japanese vinyl), adding a touch of authenticity.

Description

The Japanese vinyl edition “Daft Punk – Discovery Japanese Edition” is a real treasure for Daft Punk fans. Unlike the international editions, it was only available in Japan, making it a hard-to-find item for foreign collectors.

Released in 2001, Discovery is one of the most iconic albums by the French electronic duo Daft Punk. After the success of Homework in 1997, Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo returned with a radically different work, mixing disco, funk, pop and electronic sounds.

But Discovery is not just a musical album. It is part of a larger project, combining music and animated cinema. This is the soundtrack to Interstella 5555, a cinematic collaboration between Daft Punk and Leiji Matsumoto, Japanese animation legend and creator of Albator.

Interstella 5555: The 5tory of the 5ecret 5tar 5ystem (The Story of the Secret Star System) is a hybrid project at the crossroads of music and animation. Directed by Leiji Matsumoto, a Japanese animation legend known for Albator (Captain Harlock) and Galaxy Express 999, this film brings the tracks from Discovery to life in the form of a visual space opera. Each song on the album is paired with a sequence from the film, telling the story of a group of alien musicians abducted to become pop stars on Earth.

In 2024, for the first time, this Japanese vinyl edition is officially released in Europe. Until now, this edition was almost impossible to find outside of Japan, making it a coveted item on the second-hand market. Some copies were selling for high prices on resale platforms, further reinforcing its status as a cult object.

Daft Punk – Discovery Japanese Edition” stands out from the international editions with its exclusive cover featuring the visuals from the film. Unlike the standard versions, this edition also includes a Daft Club membership card and stickers representing the iconic characters from the film and images inspired by the world of Daft Punk.
